Overall Assessment:
A particularly good tool for the purpose of intimidating subordinates. It’s more common name is “the attitude adjuster”. Once a lowly junior engineer knows of its existence and where it rests, all you have to do is reach toward the desk drawer where it lies and the attitude adjustment will be complete. It’s ergonomic handle makes it particularly easy and comfortable to use when necessary. It has three different levels: slight adjustment, standard adjustment, and what the hell were you thinking. This stout 20 inch model is especially effective on mechanical engineers. If you must work with electrical engineers, I would suggest an electrically charged welcome mat outside your office door.

Improvements Needed:
Definitely could be bigger. Could also put spikes on the end.

LizRating

I’m giving the Pummel Industries Large Metal Handle a rating of 8 out of 10. An increase in size and addition of spikes would significantly increase the efficiency of this tool.

Date Purchased: September 2008

Overall Assessment:
The Samsung 650 series HDTV is the best bang for the buck in the LCD TV world. The 750 series has some added features on the TV’s hard drive that don’t affect the performance any. So, if you don’t need some additional recipes stored on your TV, then the 650 should be plenty good for you. At one time, the 650 series TVs were having a firmware issue where the TV would randomly turn off, especially while watching Blue Ray movies. This is no longer the case for sure, as this issue has been resolved by Samsung and any TV you buy new at the store will already have the fix in place. I have not had any issues with the TV except that I’m completely addicted to watching it!

Picture Quality:
Walk around the store and compare all the LCD TVs and pick the best one…for me that was the Samsung 650 series. It is a subjective decision that you must make on your own. I’d definitely try the Blue Ray movies with this TV as well. I nearly fell over when I saw my first Blue Ray movie. It looks so beautiful and real that you think you’re a part of the movie. They have finally found a way to show movies the same way the eye ball actually sees the world.

There are certain stores that offer a picture calibration with the purchase of the TV (for an arm and a leg). I would recommend that you not purchase the calibration for the 650 series TV for 2 reasons: first, I’ve heard it makes the dark colors too deep they all start looking the same, and second, it takes 5 minutes to go into the settings on the TV and adjust the TV to have the exact picture you desire. They tell you when advertising the calibration that it will save you such and such in electricity bills…your picture adjustment in the TV settings will also do the same in five minutes and you’ll save yourself a couple hundred dollars.

Summary:
Hopefully my many hours spent in the store will help you make your TV decision, but it really comes down to you spending time in the store comparing and buying the best TV for you. I have been nothing but pleased with the Samsung 650 series TV.

LizRating

I’m giving the Samsung 650 series TV a rating of 10 out of 10. Samsung has gotten the hang optimizing the picture quality of their TVs for the price. Let’s take advantage of it!

Comprehensive Cell Phone Review

Brand: Apple
Product Name: iPhone 3G
Model: A1241
Model Year: 2009
Amount Paid: $199
Date Purchased: 3/1/09

Overall Assessment:
Is the iPhone worth all the hype? When it first came out, I definitely thought NO. Since then, I’ve been patiently waiting and waiting to buy one until the price finally came down far enough to be on my radar. I think it was worth the wait. The touch screen functions so well that the touch screen function alone makes it the most pleasurable phone to use on the market. You can type reasonably fast on it and the email even turns sideways now to be in landscape orientation.

Email Capabilities:
After the latest update, you can now type your emails in landscape orientation. Now I really don’t have anything to complain about.

Battery Life:
I’m not completely thrilled about the battery life on the iPhone. I charge the phone every night. If I use the phone to listen to music for more than 3 hours or make business calls on it all day long, I noticed it needs to be charged before the day is over. For a normal day’s use, it seems to last all day with no problem. A normal day might be defined as about 10 phone calls less than 5 minutes long or thereabout and 3 hours of listening to music. I guess if I think about all the things this phone does, I’m not surprised the battery doesn’t last more than a day. It’s a trade off…the cooler the phone, the more battery life it’s going to consume.

Ring Tones:
The only other thing I have to whine about (call the wambulance) on the iPhone is the difficulty of creating ring tones. Unless you have a Mac computer, you have to pick one of the few eligible ringtones from your iTunes library, right click to create the ringtone, right click to create an AAC version, save the ringtone to your desktop, change the file extension from “.m4a” to “.m4r.” Ring tones are really easy to get for a Blackberry…all you have to do is go to crackberry.com and send any ring tone you want right to your phone. This is what I’m used to. So, I wanted to put some of my favorite ring tones on my iPhone. Since I didn’t purchase these ring tones on iTunes, the iPhone wouldn’t allow me to install them. I quickly found a way around this annoying little quirk! I loaded some software made by Xilisoft called Xilisoft iPhone Ringtone Maker. All you have to do is quickly create a ringtone with any song or sound bite you want and import it. It’s so easy and I get my way! Rock on! Sorry Apple suckers!

Comparisons:
The Storm doesn’t compare with the iPhone…I don’t care what they say. The Storm simply can’t compete. I even switched mobile services just to get the iPhone instead of the Storm. Not to mention…$199 for a second generation iPhone and the same price for the first generation Storm. Experience pays off! When you compare the phones, you find out that the iPhone is superior on pretty much all levels. With the iPhone, applications open faster, you can type faster, and there are applications up to your eyeballs available at your finger tips. Gotta be fair though, the Storm will catch up on the applications. And Apple’s applications will always be confided within the “Apple Box” while for Blackberry products, you can get applications from more outside sources and they’re more likely to be free on websites like www.crackberry.com.

The browsing function is better on the iPhone when compared to any of the Blackberry products. As far as internet speed, I’d say there’s not enough of a difference there to talk about. The iPhone browser seems to have a better look and feel and seems to be a little easier to use. When you need to zoom on the iPhone, you can pinch with your fingers closer together or further apart, which is just plain cool. On the Storm, you either have to double tap the screen or use the plus/minus buttons to zoom. You just have to determine what’s right for you.

Summary:
It seems to be the case that if you use your phone mostly for emailing and texting, that the Blackberry products are better for that, while if you use your phone mostly for internet and browsing purposes, then the iPhone is better for that. You’ve got to make your own decision though. Have fun playing with the phones and figuring out which one’s better for you.

LizRating

I’m giving the Apple iPhone 3G a rating of 9 out of 10. Apple has gone out of its way to make some really creative products that are pushing their competitors. That’s what we need, a little friendly competition!

My goal is to provide comprehensive, objective product reviews with a mechanical engineering perspective. I will provide comprehensive assessments on products to give consumers the knowledge necessary to make the best purchase decision possible, saving time and money and making the buying process more efficient.

Product Reviews for Understanding Market Response

Product reviews are an excellent way to understand how the market views your product and what could possibly be improved. As one with mechanical engineering experience, I provide comprehensive product reviews and critiques to take your product from good to great.

The ratings are based on the comprehensive LizRating Review Scale, which is a thorough, objective assessment and critique of the product. The LizRating Review Scale includes the following criteria at minimum:

Functions as designed

Robustness

Aesthetic appearance

Number of possible improvements

Pricing competitiveness

Performance

Overall brand rating

Overall level of recommendation

For some product types, the performance rating may include sub-criteria, which define the performance in more detail as required.

Product reviews currently include:

Sports Equipment Reviews

Home Appliance Reviews

Electronics Reviews

Over time, the collection of knowledge will only get bigger. Please be patient…I’m just getting started!

Model Year: 2006
Purchaese at: Best Buy
Product Description: 2 GB flash drive music and photo slideshow player, up to 14 hours of music playback, black

Summary:
I’ve enjoyed my iPod Nano since summer 2006 and am still enjoying it to this day. I have not had any problems with it so far. There is no shortage of cool built into this slender, lightweight, sleek looking device. I wanted a player with a flash drive so I wouldn’t have to worry about it getting damaged bouncing around while I work out every day. It’s quick to respond, buttons are easy to use, and the display is bright and easy to see.

LizRating

Each of the following 9 criteria were rated from 1 to 7, where:

1-1.9 = Product is not competitive in this specific area.
2-3.9 = Product is somewhat competitive in this specific area, but other products are considerably more competitive. Product needs improvement.
4-5.9 = Product is competitive, but some products may outperform it. Minor details when it comes to possible improvements.
6-7 = Product clearly oupterforms the competition in this specific area.

Rating Criteria

Aesthetic Appearance: 7

The iPod Nano looks great, especially in black. I love the sleek look.

Robust: 7

Looks niiiiice! I love the way my sleek black iPod looks.

Number of Possible Improvements: 2

The iPod could be a bit more robust and I would gladly sacrifice adding some weight so I wouldn’t have to worry about breaking it when I put it in my pocket. And of course, the most commonly stated possible improvement for the nano is the battery life. Although I do have to say, my Nano’s battery life hasn’t exactly decreased my quality of life either…I’m pretty impressed that this tiny thing lasts almost 14 hours!

Easy/Convenient to use: 6.5

I absolutely love how the navigation works compared to they typical MP3 player; the iPod is much quicker and easier to navigate. However, it is easy to sometimes accidentally hit buttons before I have a chance to lock it.

Pricing Competitiveness: 4

The iPod Nano is definitely the most expensive per GB, but it’s also the best and can therefore get away with being expensive. I was willing to pay the extra money to get the best and so far it’s been worth it.

Brand: 6.8

Not a big Apple fan, but still really do love the iPod Nano. One thing that stuck out when I bought the Nano was how nice the packaging was. I was really impressed by the neat, clean, and simple packaging. And it must be said that I really appreciate the simple, to the point, easy to understand operating instructions…that’s not too common!

Overall Performance: 7

Performs well, haven’t had any problems to justify a score deduction. I use my Nano every day in the car and sometimes while I’m working and love the fact that I have 100% problem free operation all the time, which could easily be taken for granted. I haven’t run into problems with the battery life, so my only experience with the Nano has been great.

Level of Recommendation: 7

I highly recommend the iPod Nano. It’s small, sleek, reliable, and easy to use.

Based on the ratings of the 8 criteria above the iPod Nano received an overall LizRating of 6.2 out of 7, where:

1-1.9 = Pick another product: The product is just not competitive in the market. May as well start from scratch.
2-3.9 = There may be better products out there: somewhat competitive, but missing a major aspect of the performance or functionality or are outperformed by the competition severely in an area of performance or functionality. Product needs improvement. May have one terrific aspect, but weak in other areas.
4-5.9 = Recommended: competitive, but may be slightly outperformed by some products in the market in minor aspects.
6-7 = Highly recommended: outperforms other products in nearly all aspects; down to the nitty gritty on what could be improved.

Other Comments and Suggestions:
The main factor in score deducton for the iPod Nano was the possible improvements: the Nano could be more robust and have better battery life. It appears that Apple has already addressed the first possible improvement by making the 2007 model a bit more robust. I have not had an opportunity to test the battery life yet, but will post the information when I have it.

Brand: Cuisinart
Model: WMR-CA
Model Year: 2004
Amount Paid: $30
Product Description: Stainless steel 7 inch classic waffle maker from Cuisinart with nonstick plates. Just to clarify, this waffle maker makes classic waffles, not belgian waffles.

Summary:
I’ve had this waffle maker since 2004 and absolutely love it. Once you learn how to use it…which takes no time at all since it’s so simple, it makes perfect, even waffles. Most importantly, it doesn’t make any annoying beeping noises. Instead, the indicator light tells you the status of your waffle. You’re a ding dong if you get far enough away from something you’re cooking that you can’t see it, so who needs a beeper anyway? Even better yet, the clean up is super easy. Once you learn to pour the batter so it never spills over, all you have to do is unplug the waffle maker, let it cool, blow off any remaining crumbs on the nonstick plates, and put it away. My kind of kitchen appliance! My husband and I use this waffle maker several times a week and have found that if you take good care of it, it’ll last forever.

LizRating

Rating Criteria

Aesthetic Appearance: 7

The waffle maker looks great. I’m a sucker for stainless, and I like the classic look.

Robust: 7

Has taken a lickin’ and kept on tickin’ since July 2004 with use nearly every day for the first year and use several days after the first year. Very impressive for the price!

Number of Possible Improvements: 0

The most common slam on this waffle maker is that people wish it made more than one waffle at a time, but if you buy a “single waffle” waffle maker, then you can’t be surprised when it only makes one waffle at a time! At least it’s quick! If you want larger waffles or more than one waffle at a time, try Cuisinart models WMB-2A (2 slice belgian waffle maker) ,WAF-4B (4 slice belgian waffle maker), or WAF-6 (6 slice classic waffle maker).

Easy/Convenient to use: 7

Extremely easy to operate. Easy to clean with nonstick plates. I was shocked at how easy this waffle maker is to use, which is why I use it all the time. It takes a few tries to learn how to make waffles without overflowing the batter and making a mess, but please be patient because it’s worth the wait.

Pricing Competitiveness: 7

I’m surprised at the quality you get with this price! If you spend more money, make sure you’re getting more waffle per cooking cycle. If you pay more money for a comparable product, all you get is the addition of an extremely annoying beeper to indicate that your waffle is done.

Brand: 7

Cuisinart makes products with excellent performance.

Overall Performance: 7

Excellent. Easy to use. Easy to clean. People often complain that the stainless and metal surfaces get hot, but it is a waffle iron…what would you expect! Keep it out of the reach of children and use some minor caution and you’ll be fine. I’ve fried my arm on it and still love it; it’s not the waffle maker’s fault I did something stupid.

Level of Recommendation: 7

I highly recommend this waffle maker for those who want a single, classic waffle maker. Can’t get any better than this for the price!

Based on the ratings of the 9 criteria above the Cuisinart Classic Waffle Maker received an overall LizRating of 7.0 out of 7, where:

1-1.9 = Pick another product: The product is just not competitive in the market. May as well start from scratch.

Other Comments and Suggestions:
Many people complain about their waffles coming out uneven and batter getting all over the outside of the waffle maker, which is difficult to clean since it bakes on. There are some simple things you can do to get perfectly even waffles and never have any spill over…it’ll make you much happier with this waffle maker. All you have to do is get a batter bowl with a spout, which makes it easy to pour the batter instead of trying to use a drippy spoon or something. When you pour the batter, start in the middle and spiral outward until you get to the outside row of little squares, then leave these empty. Wait about 20 seconds before closing the waffle maker, then close it slowly, pausing if the batter is about to overflow. After about 20 seconds of cooking, press the cover down using the handle to make sure your waffle will be even. A few seconds later your waffle’s done…it takes all of 2 minutes. Try one waffle this way and adjust the amount of batter you pour accordingly so that it doesn’t overflow, but still makes a nice full even waffle. You always have to be conservative with the amount of batter poured because the batter expands when it cooks.

Another thing people mention is that they don’t like to spend the time making waffle batter. You just have to be resourceful. I make waffle batter in 30 seconds using an egg or two, Bisquick, and enough milk to make the batter the consistency I like. Bust out the Cuisinart hand mixer for about 10 of the 30 seconds and you’ve got mixed batter ready to go. My husband can even do it!

Summary:
This Cannondale road bike is an absolute pleasure to ride and it’s incredibly fast. Nice, stiff ride, handles very well. Excellent for climbing, with good power transfer. Great balance between aggressive positioning and comfort for the long rides. I decided to go with a conservative set of components and I have not had any problems with the quality even though I push the bike pretty hard. So far, this has been a g-reat bike!

4-5.9 = Recommended: competitive, but may be slightly outperformed by some products in the market in minor aspects.
6-7 = Highly recommended: outperforms other products in nearly all aspects; down to the nitty gritty on what could be improved.

Other Comments and Suggestions:
This is my first carbon frame and I’ve found that once you go carbon you’ll never go back. Another interesting factor that affected my comfort on the bike is that after several test rides I decided to get a bike sized two centimeters smaller than recommended, which turned out to be a good decision for me. With this particular bike geometry, a size smaller kept me from being too stretched out, but still within a good fit range in all the other dimensions. The point is that when choosing your bike geometry and size, you need to make sure all of the dimensions work for you, not just the typically provided bike size dimension. Ultimately, bike fit is critical so you can be comfortable on your bike for hours at a time. I didn’t know a bike could be so comfortable until I fully understood what a good bike fit felt like when purchasing this bike. It’s worth the extra effort.

Summary:

I couldn’t have made a better choice when buying a refrigerator. I went with the stainless look, which is what I’ve always wanted. At first, I was afraid all you would see is fingerprints, but not so. It never makes any noise, which is an important factor if it is near a bedroom. I’m very pleased and would recommend the GE Adora fridge. I have not had any problems with the refrigerator. When comparing features and prices, the GE Adora was the best for the money.

LizRating

Each of the following 8 criteria were rated from 1 to 7, with 7, where:

1-1.9 = Product is not competitive in this specific area.
2-3.9 = Product is somewhat competitive in this specific area, but other products are considerably more competitive. Product needs improvement.
4-5.9 = Product is competitive, but some products may outperform it. Minor details when it comes to possible improvements.
6-7 = Product clearly oupterforms the competition in this specific area.

Rating Criteria

Functions as Designed: 7

The refrigerator seems to be efficient. According to the Energy Guide, it uses approximately 613 KWh/year, which translates to a yearly operating cost of about $51. A comparable Whirlpool refrigerator uses 616 KWh, which translates to a yearly operating cost of $56. A comparable LG refrigerator uses 713 KWh/year, which translates to a yearly operating cost of $65, which is at the upper end of the scale for all the comparable refrigerators.

Robust: 7

I have not had any problems thus far. The buttons on the water/ice dispenser window are still working perfectly and show no signs of wear.

Aesthetic Appearance: 7

The refrigerator is a pleasure to look at. Even the ice and water dispenser window looks stylish. Although the sides are not stainless, nobody knows since the fridge is pretty much covered on the sides in my kitchen. Plus, my fridge magnets won’t stick to stainless facade on the doors, so I’m glad the sides aren’t stainless so I have a place for my magnets. The doors don’t show finger prints nearly as bad as I thought they would, which is good because I’m a little lazy about cleaning them. When it comes to style, I actually prefer the GE Adora over the GE Profile. I especially like the tubular stainless steel style handles.

Number of Possible Improvements: 2

The door shelves in the freezer could be deeper. Although it would decrease the shelf depth in the main area, the deeper door shelves would be more practical for the typical frozen product size.

If there were a way to design the ice bin such that it didn’t have to be pulled out to reach the ice cubes, it would be helpful. I always feel like I need to set my cup down and put two hands on the ice bin so that it does not slide off of the guides and fall. The ideal situation would be one-hand operation when retrieving ice by reaching into the ice bin.

Pricing Competitiveness: 6.8

The GE Adora refrigerator seems to be priced pretty competitively. The lower priced refrigerators that are comparable to this one seem to be less efficient. For example, the LG electronics model SC26905 refrigerator is nearly the same and costs $1199 (versus$1299), but is near top of the energy use scale for comparable refrigerators. The LG uses 713 KWh/year versus the GE Adora’s 613 KWh/year. If you find a refrigerator priced lower than other comparable products, there is probably a reason that is worth finding that you may or may not care about.

Easy and Convenient to use: 6.8

The refrigerator is on wheels, so moving the refrigerator to clean underneath it or pulling it out a little bit so you can open the doors all the way is effortless.

The doors are heavy and close easily. I don’t want to have to slam the door shut. These doors close on their own if you just get them started.

Brand: 7

So far, I’ve been happy with GE. GE’s refrigerators rate well on the Energy Guide’s scale of power consumption when compared to other comparable refrigerators. The quality is good and I have not had any problems. Since I haven’t had any problems, I can’t tell you how the GE refrigerator customer service is.

Overall Performance: 7

Recovers extremely quickly after a ten minute grocery loading session.

The Water tastes very good. I never have to buy bottled water anymore. The filter lasts 6 months and is very easy to change. A replacement filter costs $39.95, or a three-pack of filters costs $105 on the GE website. To me, it’s a small price to pay for good water at the touch of a button.

This refrigerator is quiet, which is important to me since it is pretty close to my bedroom. I don’t want to hear the compressor cycling on and off all night long

The door in the refrigerator has great capacity. It will fit gallons of milk, jugs of orange juice, gatorades, and still has room for all of the usual condiments. This leaves gobs of much needed space on the shelves in the main area.

Water and ice dispenser buttons are easy to use. You never have to press a button more than once.

You can’t just reach in the ice bin and grab some cubes if you get impatient with the ice dispenser. You have to pull the ice bin out a little and tilt it down as opposed to having an open area at the top of the bin.

The freezer door shelves are a bit small. It would be helpful if they were a little bit deeper. I would sacrifice shelf depth in the main freezer area to gain more depth on the door shelves. I don’t typically put much in the door because there are not many frozen products that will fit.

Other Comments and Suggestions:
Pay attention to the shape of your refrigerator opening in your kitchen when deciding on a refrigerator style. I wouldn’t recommend putting a side by side refrigerator in a space with a wall that extends far past the door hinge on the freezer side because the door won’t open all the way, making it difficult to get the ice bin and other larger objects in and out. However, since the fridge is on wheels, you can pull it out as far as the cord will allow without any effort, which may or may not give you the clearance necessary to open the door based on the shape
of your kitchen’s fridge opening.
